At this time in history, Germany's chancellor, Adolf Hitler, was begining his rein on the Jews. He was blaming them for the disasters that were blamed on Germany at the end of World War I. Such as, he was blaming them for losing the war and all of the war debts. After his speach Jews were treated a lot differently. All the Jews that were on the council were kicked off, all Jewish owned businesses were shut down and Germany was trying to run them out. Many Germans had succeded at this goal. They would rob their stores and burn down their building. Jews were beated violently in the streets. After a period of time most of the Jews had left Germany. But this was only the beginning.

Now Germany was making it easier for them not only to identify Jews, but to try and stop Jews from running away. Because they needed their passports to leave the country the Nazis now put a J in the front on all of their passports. A lot of Jews were arrested and now prisoners of Germany. They were not allowed to leave the country without a visa or a pass.Then the Gestopo started to seize Jews and put them on trains to be deported to concentration camps. The Jews thought they were just going to prison not to certain death.

Now that the Jews were loaded onto the train it was time to begin leaving. The Nazis did not hesitate to make fun of them. There was a man on the train to was deathly ill and paralyzed on the the train and the Nazis where making fun of his face and saying to each other that they should get a sketch of it. There was a Jew named Herschel Grynszpan who recieved a letter from his sister. She was saying that they all had to report to the police station. There they were briefed about the deporting and how they couldnt go back to there homes. She bagged and then eventually got to go back with an officer with her tho. Then they to were boarded onto a train and deported.

Grynszpan lived with his aunt and uncle. Things were going great but one day things were not good and him and his uncle got into a pretty bad fight. Grynszpan lost his temper and stormed out on his uncle and aunt. He decided to go to a dance with some friends. But that quickly got boring so they desided to go and meet up later at a restaurant called Tout Va Bien at 9. He blow off his friends so they left. Grynszpan was making plans of going to buy a gun and kill the German prime minister. He goes and buys a revolver and decides to request the prime minister to lunch and shoot him there. When he sits down with the prime minister he stands up pulls out the revolver and fires five time missing three time and only wounding the prime minister he is arrested on the spot and send to prison.

Since Grynszpan was in prison he needed a lawyer to help with his case. So he called a man named De Moro-Giafferi to try and help. Gaffer was a skillful lawyer but also an implacable enemy of fascism. As soon as he heard tht he would be conducting Grynszpan's case either couldn't conceal their annoyance to dismay. As the Nazis gathered evidence that would prove him guilty, Giafferi was determining to fight Hitler's regime. He also offered his services to anti-Fascist committees.

But that didn't help he was soon forgotin and no one heard from Grynszpan again. But now the Nazis where beginning to strike harder against the Jews. The commander the Nazis received a letter telling him that it's time to wipeout all of the Jews. He was confused at first and called the council to ask if the letter was written right. When he was told that it was he and the rest of the Nazis began to go to each Jews house in the middle of the night and murder them. One of the Jews was found in his bathtub with his throat slit open. Some were beaten to death. One was hung from a balcony and one found in the woods badly mutilated. At the end of only one night the Jewish secretary received reports that nine Jews had been murdered horribly.

After all of the Nazis started killing Jews they moved on to the next step. The next step into total Jewish extermination is to destroy the things Jews cared about. So they started to burn down the synagogues. There was one they burned it and everyone ran out and the fire department came they didn't do anything but try to prevent it from spreading to the neighboring buildings. And then will it was nothing but a pile of ash the Nazis went up to them and said just be happy we didn't burn it with you inside.

Now the Nazis raided Jewish hospitals and orphanages. Nazi leader Dr Hez raided an orphanage and demanded that the Jewish person who led it and was in charge of all the children come with them. He thought though if he went out with all the children they wouldn't kill him cause they wouldn't have the heart to shoot him in front of children. Even the police said they don't pretect Jews so come out or well shoot you and the children. He said go a head and shoot me and my children that way the matter will be settled. Dr Hez smiled and shot the lock off the gate and they stormed in.

And now the council decides to sit down and have a meeting. They talked about the issue of the synagogues being burned to the ground, Jewish businesses being robbed and burned, Jewish people being murdered, and orphanages also being burned and the children inside them dying. So to make some temporary changes for the moment. One change was that Jews could not go to German theaters. They would have there own and could only watch Jewish movies and could never set foot in a German one. Jews could not sit on benches in the parks because they talk about all kinds of things to German mothers and their babies. So they were given there own parks.

The people of the counicl are still having their meeting. They are all still aguring about what they should do and what laws they should make for the Jews to follow and what laws they should not follow. Heydrich was the man who put this whole meeting together and wanted to make all of these laws. Jews would have to bear damages that were brought on to them. And they would just have to deal with what they lost. Dr. Woermann of the Jewish ministries said that the decree should be revised for the fate of Jews. Heydrich did not want any legal trouble so he proposed that Jewish property be confiscated without warning.

The arguing goes on for ever. Finally Heydrich has had enough and said thank you gentlemen that will be all. After that they had now decided the most effective ways to deprive the Jews of their possesions. After the night of crystal night buses and trains carried off more than 10,911 Jews to the concentration camps. The Nazis had set up what is known as a "silence of terror." Also they set up testing grounds used for the system and some closley resembling training centers used for professional torturers.

In this point of the book an SS troop has walked up to one of the prisoners and asked if he had seen him sometime before in his life. But the prisoner did not want the troop to recognize him so he immediately said no. The SS troop urged on the conversation. Then it was about eight in the morning and the camp commandant came by to inspect them for anything suspicious. He came by and glanced at a piece of paper the ground. He said "These Jews have no respect for order and cleanliness, we will have to teach them a lesson. Then the commandant started to ask us random questions. He was trying to lead us off a subject but it wasn't working for us we knew by hownhe was talking and asking questions, we knew it was going to be the end.

Now at this point the Nazis have all of the Jews standing for roll call. It was a very difficult thing for the Jews to do because this roll call was not like the roll call that we have today. They would make you stand in the same place for many hours and if you moved a single muscle you were usually shot or beat to death. Two of the men in the barracks ended up going crazy. The men in the congregation were very upset and mad. And they had the two men be dragged off. And when you listened you can still hear their screams until they shut up.

Now there was no more roll call being taken place. But now there was trouble for the Swiss people. The Swiss authorites were moved to a different location because they all had the same fear that they were going to be overrun. In March of 1938 passports where issued to Austrain Jews with a big J stamped inside so now everyone knew that they were Jews. If a Jews was traveling somewhere and they get their passport checked and do not have the J they will not be aloud to enter the place that they were hoping to travel to.

Leaders from Germany were writers who were disconcerted by this ambiguous political attitude. One writer named Emile Bure summed up in L'Ordre that we would not recommend an ideological crusade, but we should take care that in wilfully ignoring the suffering of minorities subject to Nazi laws, and in appeasing those who decree them and apply them. Also that often with deliberate sadism, France and England msy through indifference and complacency. Also to bring apon themselves the same evils which alrighty afflict the individuals and groups which have asked them to intercede.
